The Invasion of Normandy
On June 6, 1944, ships carrying troops, war supplies, and
heavy military equipment landed on the long, narrow, and heavily fortified cliff sided
beaches of Normandy, France. Crossing the English
channel together, these ships separated into five landing points each with its own code
name and military objectives. American ships
landed on beachfronts with code names “Utah and “Omaha.” British ships landed
on beachfronts with the code names “Gold and “Sword” and Canadian allied ships
landed on a beach with the code name “Juno.” This military operation on the
eastern coast of Normandy marked the beginning-of–the-end of WWII. Still, there was much blood to be shed and
unthinkable sites to be seen of the atrocities happening under Hitler’s command
as allies moved deeper inland from the coast of Normandy through the Western
fronts and into Germany.
